IBM i news, alerts and messages reach the right people. And your IBM i knows who’s on it.
qNotify is an iPhone and Apple Watch app for teams who run an IBM i. It is the front end of a notification framework installed on your own system.
What it does
Most notification tools stop at delivery: the message went out, and someone, somewhere, probably saw it. qNotify closes the loop. Any message that needs a person can be taken in charge with one tap, and the acknowledgment travels back to the IBM i with a name attached — not an anonymous device id.
Your operations log stops saying “delivered” and starts saying who.
Five ways in
On your IBM i, a message — good news or bad — can start almost anywhere:
- API
- called straight from an ILE program: RPG, COBOL, C
- SQL
- a Db2 trigger, a script, ODBC or JDBC
- CMD
- CL, the job scheduler, or the command line
- WATCH
- message queues monitored by your own rules
- EVENT
- application events and a transactional inbox
No rewriting, no middleware: whatever already knows that something happened can say so, in the language it is already written in.
On the wrist, when the phone is at home
The Apple Watch app has its own connection and its own push identity. It keeps working with the paired iPhone switched off or left behind — which is the situation it exists for.
The complication shows how many messages are still waiting for someone. When it has not been able to check, it says so instead of showing a confident, stale zero. An acknowledgment is written to disk before it is sent: a lost network, a suspended app or an unreachable server delays it, never loses it.
What you need
qNotify is not a standalone app and there is no public service to sign up for. It needs the notification framework installed on your own IBM i, and a gateway your devices can reach. Both are part of what we install with you.
Everything stays on your infrastructure: your server, your gateway, your data. Nothing passes through third-party services beyond Apple’s push infrastructure.

- what you expected to happen, and what happened instead;
- whether it concerns the iPhone app, the Apple Watch app, or both;
- the app version (Settings, at the bottom) and your iOS version;
- roughly when it happened — the gateway keeps logs, and a time narrows the search enormously.
If notifications stopped arriving altogether, try Settings → Send test alert first: it asks the server to push a notification to your devices, and tells you where the chain breaks.
